18 June 2004 The United Nations http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1383 Childrens Fund (UNICEF) has http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?629 received a ¬1.8 million http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?861 (euro) donation from the Italian http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?979 Government aimed at putting an http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?785 end to female genital mutilation http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?502 and cutting (FGM/C), a procedure http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1071 that is still performed on some 2 http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1550 million girls each year.
This http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?995 is a very welcome and important http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?505 contribution to UNICEFs efforts http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?539 towards stopping this harmful http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?622 practice. FGM/C is not only a http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1122 violation of every childs rights, http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1523 it is physically harmful and has http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1378 serious consequences for the http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1508 health of millions of girls and http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1093 women, UNICEF Executive Director http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1422 Carol Bellamy said today.
The http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1593 agency estimates that more than http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?704 100 million women and girls http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?319 around the world have suffered http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?509 from some form of FGM/C, a http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1132 procedure that causes irreparable http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1681 physical injury. It can also http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?563 cause psychological harm and can http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?308 be potentially life threatening. http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?740 The procedure is mainly performed http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?437 on children and adolescents http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?912 between six and 15 years of age; http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?531 in some countries, however, up to http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?783 half of FGM/C is performed on http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1358 infants under one year old.
In http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1253 2002 governments around the world http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?577 committed themselves to ending http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1575 FGM/C by the 2010. UNICEF salutes http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?492 the Italian Government for http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1276 putting resources behind the http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1104 promise to end FGM/C, Ms. Bellamy http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?927 said. We hope that this donation http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1155 will energize others to mobilize their efforts to meet the promise of ending FGM/C by 2010.
