Annan wraps up Iraq briefing sessions with all members

4 April 2003 United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?662 today wrapped up his weeklong briefings of all UN Member http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?595 States on the current humanitarian situation in http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?773 Iraq.
"We basically discussed the humanitarian http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1101 situation and the efforts that are being made by the United http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1154 Nations, and of course there were also questions about http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?345 post-conflict Iraq," the Secretary-General told http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1567 reporters following his meeting with the Latin American and http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1172 Caribbean Group; he had met with the African Group earlier http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?674 Friday. "We briefed them on our efforts to get http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1683 assistance to Iraq, wherever we can, but this would depend on http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1576 means and access. Wherever we have access, we will try and http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1338 reach the needy and we will do cross-border and cross-line http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1057 operations."
The Secretary-General said the meeting http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1447 also touched on the question of the post-conflict situation http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?353 and what the UN will do. "I think it is obvious that the http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?578 UN will play an important role in post-conflict Iraq," http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?380 he said. "The exact nature and extent of that role is http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1481 being discussed now among the members, but the UN has had http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1476 quite a lot of experience with situations like this, and I http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1129 hope the members will rally in trying to assist the people of http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1110 Iraq, and Iraq. However this war ends, we will be ready to http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1042 play our part."
Mr. Annan met the States in the http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1627 framework of the five regional groupings beginning on Tuesday http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?548 to exchange views with them. On Monday, he met separately http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1434 with the Arab Group, which is not one of the regional groups, http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?654 and on Wednesday he also met the 15 members of the Security http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?872 Council for lunch at his office to discuss Iraq.
In other http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1095 news, the Security Council has endorsed the http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1559 Secretary-General's recommendation to retain in Kuwait City http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1536 for a further three months a small logistics headquarters of http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?886 the UN Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM) to support UN http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1499 activities in the region, where the world body is currently http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1654 concentrating on humanitarian relief.
A letter from the http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?346 Council President to the Secretary-General released today http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?439 noted that the Council members concurred with Mr. Annan's http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1353 recommendation to retain peacekeeping presence until 6 http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?503 July.
Mr. Annan withdrew all UNIKOM personnel from the http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1002 border region on the eve of hostilities in Iraq but http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?913 maintained a small headquarters consisting of 12 military http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?819 officers, 20 essential civilian staff and some local personnel in Kuwait City.
UNIKOM was set up in 1991 after the war that followed Iraq's invasion of Kuwait to monitor the demilitarized zone between the two countries.
